A southern plant had a broken ¾" stub-out coming off a 16", 150 psi (475°F) main steam header.

After examining the problem, Team technicians determined that, due to the condition of the broken stub-out, closing on any part of it with an enclosure could result in its breaking completely off.

Team engineers designed a special enclosure to allow the broken pipe to be removed. An adjustable tapered plug that could be tightened into the remaining hole was designed into the enclosure.

The enclosure was installed and the tapered plug was tightened to reduce the blow. The enclosure was then injected and pressured with Team sealant, and the leak was sealed.

Measure-up and installation took slightly over nine hours.

Plant personnel thanked Team technicians for the job.
